Nathan Schroder

Upholstering a wall can add softness and help soundproof a room. For the bedroom of a Dallas home, designer Denise McGaha covered one wall in a Lee Jofa fabric for a relaxing touch.

4

Thin Wood Paneling

STEPHEN KENT JOHNSON

Thin custom wood paneling made of black walnut in this breakfast nook designed by Studio Shamshiri softens the white walls and concrete flooring that surrounds it. Custom blue cushions add a pop of color.

Rock-Climbing Wall

Suzanna Scott

If you're working on a kid's room, why not make the accent wall something they can play on, too? By building a rock-climbing wall, like this one in a home designed by Regan Baker, you'll add interest to the room and a fun source of exercise and amusement.

6

White Painted Brick

Stephen Kent Johnson / OTTO

Exposed brick can act as neutral accent wall, and painting them white can help achieve that coveted balance between contemporary and lived-in. Here, designer Shawn Henderson brought this 19th-century home back to its former glory by "stripping the apartment down to a more humble interior," says Henderson. He whitewashed existing pine floors and then added a faux brick wall to make it feel older.

7

Matching Pattern

FRANCESCO LAGNESE

Make furniture seamlessly blend into your accent wall by matching the wallpaper pattern to it, as designer Nick Olsen did in this

bedroom with a graphic navy wallpaper and matching upholstered headboard.

8

Orange Beadboard

Read McKendree

To brighten up a dark corner, panel a wall (or two!) in beadboard and paint them orange. In the mudroom of a Nantucket cottage, designer Kevin Isbell used Buttered Yam by Benjamin Moore.

9

Cozy Stone

ANNIE SCHLECHTER

For a cozy cottage feel, cover a wall with stone. In this primary bedroom, designer Cathy Chapman used various gray stones to give the room an earthy yet modern feel.

10

Accent Ceiling

Johnny Valiant

If you'd prefer to have a consistent neutral color on your walls, look to the ceiling for an opportunity to introduce an unexpected pop of color or pattern. A baby blue painted ceiling brightens up this Houston terrace designed by Celerie Kemble and Lindsey Herod, proving the concept works outside, too.

11

Black Box

Heidi Caillier Design

Interior designer Heidi Cailler gave this media room the black box theater effect without totally overwhelming the space by designating the deep marine paint on the TV wall.

12

Just a Splash

Tamsin Johnson

Natural stone is easily one of the most expensive surface materials money can buy. To cut costs but still spotlight a beautiful stone, just stick with one accent wall. In this kitchen designed by Tamsin Johnson, all eyes are on the smokey purple swirls of the wall ahead.

13

Hidden Door

Arent & Pyke

"'Moments’ rather than looks best encapsulate a home’s positive impact, and the ultimate moment experienced in Magnolia House is the slow and elegant descent down its new sculptural staircase, the metaphorical spine of both the home and the project," say designers Arent & Pyke. The jib door here is continuous with the baby blue painted paneling so as to not interrupt visual flow while also providing extra storage.

14

Bright and Bold

2LG Studios

A bright hue is the easiest way to make a statement in a small space. Paint one wall an energizing color, then add contrast with decor, like these blush pink chairs in a dining room designed by 2G Studio.

15

All Over Stripes

Mark Roskamas

This Manhattan guest room, designed by Amanda Darnell, uses a dynamic Kelly Wearstler wallpaper for Lee Jofa to unify its colorful artwork.

16

Just the Trim

Nicole Franzen

When you don't want to paint an entire wall, just paint the trims, moldings, or casings for a splash of color that breaks up the space. Here, GRT Architects opted for a soft lavender shade to soften the more saturated tones and to make the fluted interior glass pop even more.

17

Floral Punch

Heidi Caillier

If you don't have a massive mudroom, don't worry: Heidi Caillier designed a small makeshift mudroom in a little nook by the back entrance and elevated it with custom millwork, fresh throw pillows, and a charming wallpaper backdrop.

18

Floor-to-Ceiling Mirror Wall

In this hallway designed by Tamsin Johnson, a glam mirrored accent wall makes the space feel bigger while also doubling as a place to outfit check before running out the door.

19

Unexpected Backsplash

MARGARET AUSTIN

A unique firing process makes zellige tiles super resilient and therefore popular in kitchens and bathrooms. But elsewhere they can be functional as well: Designer Eva Holbrook put them around this hearth to protect the wall from heat and to make a style statement on the partial wall.

20

Statement Mural

Studio DB

When your formal dining room is also your everyday dining area, invest in pieces that deliver both form and function. In this Studio DB-designed space, the built-in velvet banquette is cozy and comfortable, but it also looks dressy and unusual lighting and beautiful wallpaper are easy ways to add character without taking up surface space. It doesn't get more regal than a de Gournay wallpaper but it's pricey, so you don't need to cover all the walls with it.

21

Pop of Sun

WILLIAM ABRANOWICZ

This bright yellow painted wall is a welcome, sunny surprise. But limiting it to an accent wall keeps the room feeling light, rather than making it feel a little claustrophobic.

22

Moody Texture

JENNA PEFFLEY

Black might sound terrifying, but it can add dimension and style in a surprisingly subtle way when you also choose a textured finish. Portola Paint's Roman Clay paint, pictured here, is a natural-mineral-based finish that looks much like Venetian plaster, though it's a little more subtle.

Warm Wood Planks

Subtle Pattern

Trevor Tondro

A large wall like this one can dominate a room if you go too bold or too dark, so stick to a neutral color in a subtle pattern. That way, you can afford to get a little more adventurous with your furniture and decor.

25

Fresh Paneling

If color is not your jam, don't stress—you can still try out an accent wall. Use grid wood paneling on one wall to create dimension.

Create a Beautiful Bedroom: Accent Wall Ideas

The bedroom is where the day begins. However, here they not only sleep, but also relax during the day or read in the evening, keep little things dear to their hearts to indulge in memories, and even work.

When decorating a room, there is a main condition. The interior should be calm and carry a good mood. After all, before resting, his task is to tune in a pacifying mood and reboot. And what you see when you wake up affects the whole day.

We tell you how to decorate the wall in the bedroom when it is updated or finished from scratch, about decor options and modern design trends.

The main design rules: choose the base and accent wall

It is generally accepted that light pastel or neutral shades are suitable for the bedroom: warm or cool. Win-win options are powdered blue, mint and pistachio, cream, gray and white. They play the role of a base, and accents can be introduced with accessories and a focal wall.

But professional designers emphasize that the choice of base color is individual. And someone will be comfortable in a bedroom designed in deep colors - greens and blues close to the shades of nature.

Consider the location and size of the room. A white, light blue, or bluish gray bedroom will appear larger and lighter due to the reflectivity of the lighter shades. These colors are suitable for small spaces. A spacious and well-lit room can be decorated in dark gray and blue tones.

Create the right atmosphere. If you want to turn the space into a cozy, enveloping cocoon, opt for monochrome, where nothing catches the eye or comes to the fore. Choose a base color and use different shades for decoration. When you need to add moods, remember to balance - 80% of the main color, 20% of the other. But so that nothing distracts from the rest, decorate the accent wall at the head of the bed.

Bedroom accent wall solutions: materials, textures and patterns

The decoration of the wall in the bedroom above the bed should match the style of the interior, the palette and the rule of color balance. To create a relaxing atmosphere, designers are advised to abandon complex ornaments and catchy shades. But the most important thing is the personal tastes of the owner, because the design reflects the individuality.

Eco style interiors based on earthy tones complement natural textures well. The accent wall at the head is often finished with natural wood panels or slats. Another trend is textile design. Soft panels are suitable for modern classics and help create an atmosphere of comfort. However, it is worth remembering that dust will accumulate in them.

In the Scandinavian bedroom, wood is also relevant, as well as brick, modern macrame on bizarre branches or rings, reminiscent of dreamcatchers with feathers. A shelf above the bed with posters in thin frames can also act as decoration.

A special place is occupied by paintings as the most common way to decorate an accent wall in the bedroom. They can be modular, on canvas with or without a stretcher. You can choose one large or several small ones of different sizes. Hanging on a nail is not necessary. Today, paintings are put on the shelf.

Setting accents in the interior: focus on the wall

7 ideas from Russian projects

Metlakh tile carpet, dark green walls, mobile puffs — we share a selection of win-win ideas for decorating the entrance area in your apartment.

Publication date: 11/20/2020

Material prepared: Olga Sonj

Russian designers pay as much attention to the design of the entrance area as they do to the public area: why not, because sometimes the design of the hallway affects the perception of the entire interior, it is the entrance area that sets the right atmosphere and mood that reigns in the interior. How to make it comfortable, cozy and spectacular? We share a selection of successful solutions.

1. Deep wall color

By painting the walls of the entrance area in this apartment in a dense blue-green hue, designer Natalya Casanova managed to hide the architectural flaws of the room (many corners). But not only: now, in contrast to the dark and chamber hallway, the kitchen-living room area painted in a fashionable gray shade seems more spacious and lighter than it really is.

Fragment of the interior. Project author: Natalia Casanova. Photo: Sergey Krasyuk.

2. Mobile pouffes

In order to save useful space in a small hallway, the author of the project, Gulia Vidyaskina, made the overall poufs mobile - now they can be easily hidden in a special compartment provided in the built-in closet.

3. Disguised interior doors

In the interior by Decora studio, the walls of the entrance area are decorated with veneered panels with chrome inserts. Thanks to this solution, the authors of the project managed to hide the doors to private rooms and even arrange a small passage for the owners' pet, the Macho Spitz.

Well, not only numerous lamps, but also sliding glass partitions help to make the space visually larger and cozier — they create spectacular reflections and delicately reflect the light.

4. Invisible built-in wardrobes

In this chamber hallway, all the wardrobes are built-in and completely invisible - all thanks to the facades under white matte lacquer, which merge with the wall as much as possible.

5. Art

Decorating the walls in the hallway in a minimalist interior, the architect Tatyana Levina-Kononova chose a large-format bright picture. It serves as the focal point of the interior, diverting attention from the too narrow passage in the corridor, and is a bright decorative accent in the entrance area.

6. Shelving instead of a wall

When you need to lighten the entrance area and visually expand it, it is a good idea to separate the hallway from the kitchen-living room not with a blank wall, but with a shelving unit. In the project of designer Anastasia Kovalchuk, such a rack works on both sides: decor is placed on the shelves, and accessories and trifles are placed in the bottom closed drawers.

7. Metlakh tiles carpet

Lay it right from the front door, as designer Svetlana Dikushina did in her project. It will turn out beautiful, and practical, and spectacular: metlakh tiles have been one of the most decorative and durable materials since Victorian times, when they adorned the floors of palaces and iconic public buildings.
