Entryway runner ideas

10 rugs, runner and non-slip flooring ideas |

Hallway runner ideas are a practical and stylish addition to an entryway. Bringing instant warmth and personality, runners are a popular flooring choice for hallways, with companies offering a wealth of materials, sizes and designs. ‘Following the trend for hard floors people are realizing that a soft floor can be an undeniable luxury,’ says Andy Guard, creative director, Roger Oates Design.

As well as offering softness underfoot, hallway runners can be a design feature, too. In fact, being connecting spaces, hallways can be a brilliant space to make a statement. ‘As you only pass through the hall you can afford to be bold with design and add an injection of color to an otherwise neutral house,' adds Andy Guard.

If you’re redecorating your hallway or simply looking for ways to update it, we’ve rounded up a selection of runner designs to add to your list of hallway flooring ideas to help get you inspired, along with tips from the experts.

Hallway runner ideas – what to consider when choosing an entryway rug

When choosing hallway runner ideas there are many factors to consider, from material and weave to size and color, so be sure to request samples where possible.

On a practical level hallway runners, much like carpet ideas, bring warmth and softness to hard floors, but also bring other benefits, too. ‘On wooden or stone floors, if laid with underlay, a hallway runner will soften the resonating sounds of crashing feet but allow the wood or stone beneath to be visible making them far chicer than fitted carpets,’ explains Andy Guard, creative director of Roger Oates Design .

Available in infinite colors and patterns, runners are a quick way to update the look and feel of a hallway, plus can make a great foundation for creating a unique scheme. 'A runner also unites everything in terms of color and structure,' says suggests Martin Waller, Founder of Andrew Martin . ‘Picking out a color from a rug is a good starting point to build a scheme as it will ground similar shades to create an overall coordinated look. '

Hallways are high traffic areas in constant use, so when choosing runners it's important to opt for a durable material. When laying a runner on a hard floor such as stone and wood it is also important to fit an underlay – ‘we recommend that you use an anti-skid underlay to prevent slippage,’ says Andy Guard.

1. Lay down a timeless stripe in a narrow hall

Striped runners are a brilliant choice for a hallway as they bring a touch of pattern without over-power a space and still offer plenty of variety in design. 'Stripes are timeless and the variations infinite, from classic fine pinstripes to contemporary asymmetric bands of color,' says Andy Guard.

As well a design feature striped runners can also make clever narrow hallway ideas, making spaces feel larger than they are. 'Stripes along the hall will lengthen it whilst stripes across the hall will make it appear wider.'

2.

Choose a cheerful color in a white hallway

As hallway carpet ideas and staircase carpet ideas are often the elements we first see after a long day it makes sense for them to be cheerful and uplifting, so why not use a colorful runner to help enhance the mood? Warm and uplifting, this yellow design is guaranteed to help you feel happier at home.

3. Embrace pattern in a minimalist space

With vibrant colors and an elaborate pattern reminiscent of traditional Suzani carpet designs, this beautiful runner is the perfect way add warmth and personality to a neutral hallway with out concealing its prized parquet floor.

In addition, patterned runners are 'perfect for high-traffic areas like hallways and staircases, where dust and dirt are repeatedly trodden into the carpet,’ adds Jodie Hatton, Residential design manager at Brintons .

For areas in constant use such as busy staircases, consider a hallway runner made from natural materials such as sisal, suggests Jon Flannigan product manager at Kersaint Cobb . ‘Runners made from 100% Sisal are practical flooring solutions as they are hardwearing and stain resistant; making them perfectly suited to entranceways and stairs. Runners can be fitted on the stairs either as a standard carpet, attached with stair rods or used as stand-alone hall runner.'

This Morocco sisal striped stair runner idea also serves to draw the eye and create a focal point in this large entrance hallway.

5. Invest in sustainable options with natural fibres

Looking to reduce your impact on the environment? Try a runner made from natural fibres such as seagrass, sisal and jute as an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic designs. With 85 percent of its rugs and runners being made from sustainable, natural sources, Alternative Flooring's Big Jute runner treads lightly on the planet.

'Natural fibres such as Jute are hardwearing and Big Jute is surprisingly soft underfoot,' says  Lorna Haigh creative director of Alternative Flooring. 'Each has characterful texture and most wear well in high traffic areas such as entrances.'

Indeed the neutral woven finish and honeyed coloring of jute and natural fibres can be a beautiful way to inject subtle texture to a hallway as well as a timeless feel.

6. Have a bespoke runner made-to-measure

While there are plenty off-the-shelf runners available in standard sizes, but opting for a design which can be tailored to the dimensions of your hallway is the best way to guarantee the perfect fit, especially if you are have a particularly long hallway or are looking for small hallway ideas.

In this long hallway a subtle striped runner accentuates the length of the space while the soft color helps keep the spacer feeling bright and airy. 'Stripes add visual interest to the floor and for those tight on space, it is worth remembering that linear stripes can help to enlarge the appearance of a room, this is especially effective in hallways as the stripe draws the eye along the design and therefore appears to elongate the area,' says Jon Flannigan product manager, Kersaint Cobb.

7. Celebrate craftsmanship with an antique runner

Often unrivalled in quality and showcasing exquisite craftsmanship and natural dyes, antique rugs and runners are a perfect compliment to period homes or traditional hallways. From Persian carpets to Turkish kilims, there are a dazzling array of designs available from across the globe which showcase unique manufacturing methods and have designs characteristic of different regions.

9. Add softness with a muted color palette

Good quality runners can be an expensive purchase so it's important the design you choose has longevity. For a design guaranteed to stand the test of time, you can't go wrong with a classic herringbone weave in a soft pastel shade. Offering gentle color and texture this duck egg design makes a beautiful complement to the natural timber and creamy stone often found in country and cottage hallways.

10. Create a striking contrast for a contemporary look

If you are in search of modern hallway ideas consider choosing a bold or color-led design. With strong architectural lines and a neutral palette, this contemporary hallway could appear cold, but by introducing a surprising pop of color with a red runner the designer has brought a new dimension to the space, helping to make it feel more welcoming and homely. Additional texture is introduced through the woven wallpaper.

What kind of rug do you use for a hallway?

Hallways are often long, connecting spaces, which means oblong runners are a perfect rug type for the space. Hallways are high traffic areas, so when choosing a rug or runner for a hallway it is important to choose a hard-wearing material which can withstand constant footfall such as sisal, seagrass, jute or a wool flatweave design.

Plain colors and textured designs made from natural fibres, along with simple stripes, will lend a timeless feel, alternatively 'a lively colorful pattern creates both instant atmosphere and helps to hide dirt and marks,' says Lorna Haigh, creative director at Alternative Flooring.

How big should a rug be in a hallway?

How big your hallway rug is ultimately comes down to personal preference. One of the main purposes of a runner is to bring warmth and texture to hard floors which can be cold underfoot, as well as to help cushion the noise of feet on the floor, for this reason it is important that a hallway rug is large enough to cover the areas of the floor that receive the most footfall.

Whether wooden floorboards, natural stone flags or beautiful tiles, hard floors are, however, beautiful characterful features of our homes which deserve to be shown off, so bear this in mind when deciding on the dimensions of your rug or runner and choose a size that allows part of your prized hard floor to remain visible.

23 Entryway Rug Ideas Sure to Wow Your Houseguests

Design: Emily Henderson, Photo: Sara Ligorria-Tramp

Your entryway is the first thing people see when they step inside your home. So naturally, you want to ensure it makes a great impression. Your storage furniture should be sleek and functional, your lighting should bring out the best in your space, and your seating should offer a cozy place to slip in and out of shoes.

But your entryway rug has the toughest job of all: it should tie the room together—adding the pop of color, print, or texture your entryway needs to feel complete. This is a tall order for any decorative accent—and any decorator. But, there’s plenty of inspiration to help you pick the right rug for the job. Over the years, interior designers have crafted tons of stunning entryways, and they’ve left lots of great entryway rug ideas in their wake.

Whether your entryway is a sprawling foyer, a sleek hallway, or a space-efficient mud room, there’s an entryway rug that’s perfectly suited for your space—and an entryway rug idea that’ll help you find it.

Don’t have space for an entryway rug and a traditional doormat? Split the difference with a hardy floor mat. By snagging a rug made of a tough material, like jute, sisal, or nylon, you can invite houseguests to wipe off their shoes—while dressing up your entryway.

When it comes to rugs, it’s tempting to go bold. But your pop of color needn’t be loud to make an impact. So take a look around your space, and choose your palette-changer accordingly. If your foyer is filled with neutrals—like black, white, and beige—even a soft accent color, like sage green, can turn heads.

Your entryway rug doesn’t exist in a vacuum—at least, it doesn’t have to. By adding a bench to your entryway and snagging some pillows that match your rug, you can turn your standalone statement-maker into a standout decor scheme.

There are lots of ways to orient your rug in your entryway. But one unexpected option? Turn it diagonally. If your foyer leads to two different spaces, tilt your rug toward one of them. This surprising choice is sure to draw the eye—plus, it’ll suggest a natural way for traffic to flow through your space.

When looking for rugs, you’ll find rectangle after rectangle. But remember that other rug shapes exist, too. A round rug could make the perfect addition to your foyer, filling the space without making it feel cluttered.

Rugs are as much about how they feel as they are about how they look, so shop with texture in mind. If you want your home to make a cozy first impression, snag a small shag carpet. The fluffy find will welcome your feet with comfort every time you slip off your shoes.

Your rug doesn’t have to be colorful from top to bottom. By scoring a rug with a playful border, you can add a dash of color, print, or texture to your foyer without overwhelming the room.

Amy Bartlam

Your rug may not be the only soft accent in your entryway. And if it isn’t, decorate with all your entryway textiles in mind. Color-coordinate the pieces to create a striking wall of similitude. Or mix and match colors and prints to create a cozy, dynamic space.

Positioning your rug near your door makes sense. But it isn’t your only option. By placing your rug in the center of your entryway, you can make the space feel bigger and grander. And you can draw attention to other accents in the room, like pretty chandeliers or sleek entryway tables.

Investing in a pretty doormat may seem like a boring choice. But the tried-and-true approach is a classic for a reason. Doormats are the right size to dress up an entryway without making it feel crowded. So snag one that’s pretty enough to pass as a rug—or find a rug that’s small and sturdy enough to double as a doormat.

Calimia Home

Why limit yourself to just one entryway rug? If your foyer is remarkably spacious—or unusually shaped—two rugs might do the job better than one. So stick a textured floor mat by your front door, and snag a pretty printed carpet to keep in your hall.

House Nine Design

Instead of filling your entryway with a massive rug, look for a narrow runner and display it longwise. If you find an option that’s about as wide as your door is, you can create the at-home equivalent of a red carpet—giving guests a pretty path to walk down every time they step through your front door.

Since entryway rugs are eye-catching but impermanent, they’re open invitations to take a risk. So consider using yours to add some contrast to your space. If your entryway is skewing classic, balance it out with a bold modern rug. The accent will change the way your space feels—especially if you pair it with equally striking entryway furniture.

Mindy Gayer Design

Sneak some softness into your space by choosing a rug that matches your floors. This choice may seem like an odd one: Aren’t rugs supposed to make a statement? But if you love the way your space looks and just want some added texture, why disrupt your decor scheme with a piece that's bold or bright?

15 of 23

Becca Interiors

Jute rugs are a classic pick for any entryway. But if you want your space to feel special, search for an unusual option. Look for a jute rug that’s emblazoned with a pretty print or dressed up with a fun weave. These surprising details will make the rug more eye-catching—without sacrificing its signature texture.

Devon Grace Interiors

Cozy up your entryway with a rug that fills most of the room. While area rugs are popular in living rooms and dining rooms, they look just as lovely in foyers and entryways. So snag a fluffy carpet that stretches from wall to wall, and let it fill your space with color, print, or texture.

Katie Hodges Design

One surefire way to craft a stunning entryway? Make everything the same color. Snag a striking console table, top it with color-coordinated decor, and ground the space with a printed rug that matches the rest of the room.

18 of 23

Calimia Home

If you’re struggling to find the perfect entryway rug, take cues from the space around it. Color-coordinate your rug with the rest of your palette, echo the boldest print in the room or pick a rug that’s made from the same material as your favorite furniture pieces.

Pure Salt Interiors

Struggling to find the perfect rug for your entryway? Piece together a few different rugs, instead. By layering a pretty printed rug over a shoe-friendly floor mat, you can add style where you want it and practicality where you need it.

Liljencrantz

Statement-making rugs come in many shapes and sizes. And when we say shapes, we really do mean it. So instead of making a statement with a bright color or bold print, turn heads by picking a rug that’s an unusual shape.

Design: Emily Henderson, Photo: Sara Ligorria-Tramp

Keep things simple by snagging a rug lined with stripes, florals, or some other classic print. These options have stood the test of time for a reason—and they’re delightfully easy to decorate with. So resist the urge to overcomplicate: Set the scene with a simple rug, and let your furniture handle the rest.

22 of 23

Katie LeClercq

If your entryway opens into another room, color-coordinate the rugs you pick for each space. Snag a round printed rug for your entryway—and a similar-looking square rug for your living room. While this kind of coordination isn’t necessary, it’s a statement-making way to create cohesion in your space.

When choosing your entryway rug, don’t favor form over function. After all, your entryway rug is supposed to welcome people into your home. And if it’s too delicate to step on, it’s not doing its job. So look for a rug that’s stylish, but sturdy. And if you really want your houseguests to feel comfortable, snag a pretty printed rug that’s designed to look weathered.

7 Design Mistakes You Might be Making In Your Entryway

How to protect yourself while jogging?

The purpose of this article is not to intimidate you to trembling knees, forcing you to give up running in forests and parks, but to give you theoretical and practical skills in the difficult matter of self-defense.

The psychology of self-defense: why the "good girl syndrome" is dangerous

In winter, many of us run around at night, sometimes through insufficiently lit yards and streets, although the likelihood of running into violence remains even during the day in the city center.

And the first thing to do is to get rid of the “good girl syndrome” (whatever your gender): I am a good girl, nothing bad can happen to me. Maybe. Unfortunately, maybe. Male runners are also far from safe.

Alas, maniacs, rapists, thieves and other inadequate personalities live literally next to us. It would be great if the stigma “I am a scumbag and a rapist”, “pedophile”, “psychopath” lit up on their foreheads, but, as you understand, this does not happen.

So instead of falling into the grip of the good girl syndrome, mentally tell yourself, “This can happen. It might happen today. With me". And get ready to protect yourself and your life - by completely legal and affordable means, which are described below.

And one more thing: forget about such a thing as provocative behavior. In any violence, the rapist is always to blame, not the victim. No, it's not your fault that you went running at the wrong time, in the wrong place, in tight leggings and a defiant jacket. If you were robbed, beaten, raped - you are a victim, you are not to blame.

Exercise 1: the main problem of self-defense

And now the first of our exercises - please stand on the scales. How much do you weigh? 55 kg? 62 kg? Now imagine that the aggressor attacking you is one and a half times heavier and more experienced.

Even if you are a male runner, remember the last time you fought seriously. Fourth grade? Earlier? And this bastard fought all his life, he left the house already "charged" with the thought of robbing someone. So what to do? You can't turn into Mike Tyson because you're not Mike Tyson, and you don't have to. And what you need?

Understand that when you are slapped on the buttocks, your phone is pulled out, three people grab you and you are dragged into the bushes, it means only one thing - you were chosen as a victim, but you did not notice it, and they were able to approach you.
You missed it, and an outsider invaded your personal space.

Exercise 2: Personal space and why it matters

Next exercise: stand in the middle of the room and imagine that a person is approaching you. Unfamiliar to you, but causing instinctive anxiety - you can invent this person or imagine someone specific unpleasant. And this guy slowly starts to approach you, and you can mentally tell him "stop!" any time you want it.

Well, where did you mentally stop the nasty guy? There is about a meter between you and him, right? So, this distance, which is approximately equal to the length of an outstretched arm, is your personal space, where no stranger can enter.

Yes, there is still public transport during rush hour, but now we are not talking about it. Why is it so important not to allow outsiders, and even more suspicious people, into your personal space? Because it is difficult to rob or rape a woman standing a meter away from the aggressor. It won't reach.

Another important nuance: arm's length is the distance at which you can be reached with a correctly placed punch. And if you miss this blow, as well as the hold, by the hall (namely, supposedly harmless “courtling” gestures often turn into captures and creases, for example, when they try to hug you by the shoulders or by the waist), you have already lost. Why? Now you will learn, but first do a new exercise.

Exercise 3: Missed hit

Stand in the middle of a room or any other free space where you won't hit anything or anyone. Put your feet shoulder-width apart, stretch your right hand up, look at your own fingers and set the time on the gadget to 30 seconds. No more, and when the signal sounds, start spinning to the right, looking at your own hand.

30 seconds pass - how are you feeling? Floating in the eyes, complete disorientation, someone sat on the ass - it's okay. Now try to answer what month it is and what was the name of your grandfather on your mother's side? You are unlikely to do it immediately and easily. ..

Why was this mockery of you necessary? The fact is that this is how you will feel when you miss a blow to the head.

Forget the beautiful Hollywood fights where the heroes bludgeon each other for half an hour without much damage. The average street fight is not a boxing ring with a referee. On the street, the fight takes about 11 seconds - exactly until someone misses that same blow to the head. Why exactly in the head? Because a blow to the body is less traumatic, and in winter you can wear warm clothes that soften the blow.

But the same applies to the imaginary aggressor: a set of "two warm sweaters + a knee-length leather jacket that covers the throat" - and that's it, two of the three main points of application of force in self-defense (eyes, throat, genitals) are tightly closed. And he can also have a knife, brass knuckles, firearms.

So what to do, how to protect yourself? Go for a run with a machete? To put it mildly, not the best choice, but we will return to the means of self-defense. Now we have another task - training a repulsive look and voice.

Exercise 4: “Hands away, step back!”

And now, if there are relatives at home, warn them that you have a training session, otherwise the orderlies will be called. Standing in front of the mirror, imagine that you see in it not yourself, but the very vile type that you imagined or remembered earlier.

How to identify the aggressor in a person approaching you? Most likely, he will have a shifty look, he can say soothing words to you: “Such a beautiful girl - and she runs alone, can I go with you? Beauty, are you cold? Come to me, I will warm you, etc.

But here is a characteristic detail - approaching, the aggressor can scratch himself, touch his face, rub his hands, pull his beard. Why is he doing this? Instinctively, for complacency. Yes, yes, even the most experienced rapist deep down fears that something might not go according to his plan, and such stroking movements (compulsions) help him calm down.

Look at him, then inhale and shout loudly, confidently and unambiguously: “Hands off!”. Or something similar that, in your opinion, can stop the aggressor. Just don't mumble, don't whisper, shout loudly and sharply. And take a step or jump back - remember, in this way you leave the affected area.

At the same time, do not turn your head to the sides, in any case do not turn your back to the aggressor and do not stand on even legs, it is better to slightly bend them at the knees. Firstly, in winter it will be more difficult to knock you down on a slippery surface, and secondly, thanks to half-bent knees, you retain greater maneuverability and can both jump back (again - always look at the aggressor!), And to the side.

Simultaneously with your voice, try to practice a repulsive look - straight into the eyes, sharply and as if repelling the aggressor with your eyes.

Another nuance of the repulsive scream that is worth mentioning: whoever you are, try not to use swear words.

Not because you are an intelligent person, but swearing is fu. The point is different: very often violence is committed by those who have already been in places of deprivation of liberty, and such individuals can react extremely sharply to swear words that have a special meaning for them.

Is it worth calling for help from others?

If you notice that someone suspicious is guarding you, walking or running after you, and you have the opportunity to call by phone and call someone close to the park or stadium, call.

If not, then try to contact the athletes training nearby and ask them to accompany you.

If there are no athletes nearby, just turn to passers-by (best of all, to military personnel or policemen), if they are not nearby, even to an elderly woman with bags, few of the aggressors will dare to attack two, even unprepared women.

Well, what should you do if you don't have a husband, friend, brother, you are in another city and you are being persecuted? Inhale-exhale, pretend to take out the phone and loudly, confidently call any male name that comes to your mind, and then say something like the following text: ". .. I finished my run, so you come, darling, come, I'm waiting for you, and our dog, American Staffordshire, let me out to meet me." It's a bluff, but it could save your life.

What if the aggressor is physically weaker?

Imagine: you are running through the park, and then a dirty bum appears in front of you, blocks the road and starts begging: "Man, give me a ten ... Man, well, be a friend - there is not enough for a bottle, give me a ten." Do not hope that you will pay off ten. That is, you can give a change, but if after that the homeless person does not leave, but presses on you even more, the matter is unclean.

His task is not to beg you for cash, but to swindle you into aggression. As soon as you push him away, his buddies will fly in from nowhere (they are watching you carefully during a skirmish, but you don’t see them) and start beating, and then robbing, undressing. Representatives of some national groups can “breed” in a similar way.

A repulsive look and voice will make it clear that you are not the easiest prey, and attackers may switch to a new victim.

What if someone wants to rob you?

When an intruder approaches you, most likely he wants her property, body or life from a woman. Or any combination - rob and rape, rape and kill, etc.

A man is more at risk of being robbed than being subjected to sexual violence, although this option cannot be ruled out. But its probability is small, so, most likely, they will want to take away the newfangled gadget from the runner, which he imprudently “lit up” while jogging.

Here is what master of sports and boxing coach Roman Kudryavtsev says about this situation:

“On the street, you don’t have to prove anything to anyone and resist. Your phone, gadgets, equipment are not worth your life. Better not to fight than to lose health or life. Watch who approaches you, as well as those around you - try not to be pressed against the wall. And then give back what the criminal demands, do not be heroic, especially if you are a woman in high heels, it is better to break the distance between you and the robber as soon as possible.

What kind of self-defense can be used?

You have one huge advantage over intruders: you love and know how to run. Therefore, the best thing you can do in any threatening situation is to run away abruptly.

Believe me, a dash of 100 meters can already cool the aggressor or switch his attention to another victim. And besides the ability to run, you have comfortable running shoes and numerous workouts, while your aggressor, if he was engaged in physical education, then in his distant childhood, and now overweight and years of alcoholism will not let him catch up with you.

Absolutely accessible and legal means of self-defense will allow you to leave the affected area. Why are we not talking about knives, brass knuckles, etc.? And because if you don’t know how to use them, then you shouldn’t take them for a run - an attacker can stab you with your own knife.

The same applies to firearms permitted in some countries - in our area there are so many dark places in legislation and judicial practice that it can be difficult even for lawyers to understand them.

Therefore, we will talk about something else - about what you can take with you anywhere (for a run, to the airport, to visit the president). This is a flashlight and a whistle.

How can a flashlight help? In the dark, the light of a flashlight directed at a person will blind him, winning those saving few seconds for you.

In addition, imagine the following situation: you are returning from a run, tired, and a likely aggressor is waiting for you at the entrance. Yes, if there is someone at home who can protect you, then, having met face to face with a suspicious type, it is better to leave the entrance as soon as possible and call asking for help. And if there is nowhere to wait for her? Then shine a flashlight directly into his eyes.

Particularly good for this occasion are flashlights with strobe (intermittent) light , similar to the illumination of nightclubs amplified several times. Such light can blind even for half an hour. And there is no responsibility for using a flashlight. Yes, you can meet a new neighbor who couldn't find the keys in such a bizarre way, that's okay. Then bring him a cake or invite him for a joint run.

A whistle - the most common whistle, which is given a command at the start and finish - can not only confuse the aggressor, but also attract the attention of others.

Not everyone can scream or call for help in a stressful situation: some literally take their breath away, and it is easier to whistle than to scream. The whistle, just like a flashlight, is completely legal, weighs very little and is accessible to everyone.

At the same time, the use of gas cartridge has its own characteristics and not everyone knows how to use it: the jet cannot be directed against the wind (it will carry you), it can do little to help in a confined space (entrance, elevator), therefore it cannot be recommended as a universal means of self-defense.

Various kinds of brass knuckles are designed not only to strengthen the blow, but to make it more biting and scratching. Such tools allow you to strike quickly, but their use has its own specifics: it requires a special scratching blow to the face from top to bottom - the attacker will be scratched and is unlikely to continue the offensive.

There is a nuance - such a rebuff can stop, or it can anger, so if you can stop the criminal, run. Another point to keep in mind: if, as a result of such a rebuff, you seriously mutilate the attacker, and even more so deprive the eye, you will have to answer.

Small, pendant-like self-defense equipment that can be worn around the neck or as a bracelet on the arm will not cause much damage (unless you hit aiming at the eye or temple - and here it is easy to exceed the measure of self-defense), but they can give an illusion that the runner is protected. Alas, this is not so - the attacker's winter clothes will soften the blow, and the small mass of such a pendant will not allow the criminal to be stopped.

The same applies to stun guns - they are applicable only at close range, when you have already been grabbed, and there are a couple of seconds left before you, for example, are strangled. Will you manage to grab the shocker in a couple of seconds, feel the neck of the attacker and press the button? It's better not to let anyone into your personal space than to take that risk.

A blatantly bad idea from the self-defense lists for runners - studded sneakers. With spikes not at the bottom, but located where sneakers usually lace up, it's hard to imagine how many years you have to give kickboxing or Muay Thai to be able to land a stopping blow with such spikes.

As long as you aim where, and most importantly, how you strike with these wonder shoes, you will miss a blow to the head. Or, if you dodge and kick with your foot, the other leg will remain defenseless and the question is whether the attacker will intercept your "shock" leg, or knock you down.

Exercise 5: Find a tool in 5 seconds

Instead of wasting money on such not-so-effective tools, do the following exercise.

All you need to do is stop at any time while jogging, look around for 5 seconds and find something with which you can protect yourself if you don’t have a flashlight, spray can, shocker with you.

It can be: a stone (the most ancient weapon of attack and defense), a stick, a bottle (especially with sharp edges), the most ordinary sand or snow (sit down, scoop it up with your hand and throw it in your eyes - a great way to stop an intruder and a head start for you to run away ).

How to behave during and after sexual assault

Hollywood is filled with wonderful (or terrible) films about how victims of violence suddenly become special forces soldiers and take revenge on their abusers.

Forget it. These are fairy tales that have nothing to do with real life. If victims were capable of such sophisticated revenge, and violence was punished as bloody, there would be much fewer aggressors.

In reality, victims of violence (this includes psychological aggression, robbery, sexual harassment or sexual crime) are usually depressed and demoralized.

They experience (most often alone) post-traumatic stress disorder and very rarely go to either law enforcement or mental health professionals such as psychologists, psychiatrists, and psychotherapists.

Here is what Spartak says Saturday, Candidate of Psychological Sciences, Ph.D., psychiatrist:

“There are three types of rapists: domineering, sadistic and angry. Those who can attack in the street are the angry type of rapist, because the sadist is interested in inflicting pain, while the domineering one is in suppression.

An angry person can be stopped by aggressive resistance: shouting, calls for help, physical resistance. In no case should you humbly surrender, you must defend yourself and your life, because there are often cases when, having met active resistance, the attacker retreated. And passive acceptance of sexual violence can lead to the fact that the perpetrator still does not want to let you live. So resist.

It's fine if you can remember the attacker's facial features, but if you can't, it's okay to do it later during a cognitive interview with a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) specialist.

So what do you do if you have been abused: first go to the police and then to a CBT specialist. Why do I recommend this type of therapy? Because her techniques will allow for short-term therapy, which will not only prevent post-traumatic stress disorder from developing, but will also allow you to form a positive experience.

Simply put, you won't have a panic attack about running outside because rapists don't work in the same place. Moreover, if the victim resisted and probably contacted the police, this place is safe.”

Despite the fact that the actions of law enforcement agencies are far from ideal, it is worth declaring that an unpleasant incident happened to you while jogging. Even if you broke free, ran away, called for help - by informing the police, you might save someone's life.

What is the result

- In any threatening, incomprehensible situation - run away.

- If you are robbed, it is better to give everything, your life is more precious.

- Keep strangers out of your personal space.

When you go for a run, tell your family where and how long you will be running, warn them that you may need their help (meet them after the run, near the house, etc.).

- Take your phone with you, but do not show it to others, especially if it is an expensive gadget.

- Pay attention to the people around you - among them there may be not only intruders, but also those who can help you.

- At night, avoid deserted routes, let there be pharmacies, supermarkets, ideally police stations on your way.

- If you are attacked - resist, use what you have with you, at hand, but exactly until it becomes possible to break out and run away.

- If you were able to stop the attacker, and even more so, knock him down - do not finish off, but run away. There is no need to break his neck, gouge out his eyes and the like - otherwise you will already have problems with the law.

- Report any assault or attempted violence to the police.

- Do not hesitate to contact a psychotherapist if necessary - this applies to both women and men.

We hope that the article did not intimidate you, but gave you the opportunity to get acquainted with the legal methods of self-defense. Or maybe someone will become interested and, in addition to running, will include training in boxing, hand-to-hand combat, and Krav Maga in their training program.
